CONSENSUS COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Merriam-Webster defines a champion as “winner of first prize or first place in a competition” or “who shows marked superiority.”

Generally, the NCAA Tournament winner is then the national champion. In years where there was no NCAA Tournament, the consensus National Champion is then selected by determining who is most generally agreed to have finished ranked first amongst all the college basketball teams in the country, factoring in disparate schedules. The Helms Athletic Foundation and the Premo-Porretta Power Poll are the most notable national championship selectors in those years.
